15657 I believe this show to be one of the best in my modest collection. The quality is brilliant, the band is large and tight throughout, and the vocals are out of sight open to close. The first set eases you in shaking the joint a little with a nice half-step opener, then a mellow yet solid run winding it's way to a large Straw that sets the tone for an incredible second set. The Shakedown>Good Lovin opener is extraordinary. The Ship that follows is plain beautiful. This set is laced with some dynamite jams: Shakedown, Playin, Nobody's, DSO really shines through on these selections. By that I mean they are not so much re-creating as they are creating a previously played set list in their own image. Not to suggest that their are any bold changes but DSO really gets off and makes this set their own. The only draw back is the Drum Raid Family; to be kind, they suck, I've heard better at Saturday markets on a rainy day. The first set is pretty solid, if not for the lack of jam songs. I really like the minglewood, and the Jack Straw is pretty choice. The shakedown just keeps going and going. It is almost rambling at times, but still nice, at a full 18 minutes long no less. Ship and Samson are nice. I remember a guy next to me at the show during Ship of Fools talking about what a beautiful song it was, and his neighbor nodded in agreement. I think we all were. Terrapin is rather standard, but I really like the playin' jam. It hits a nice groove toward the end where the band all bounces on a specific riff. It then drifts off spacey-like into the drums, which I kinda liked. I especially like the steel drum sound. It is rather long though. It hardly sucks, imo. NFA out of the space is nice, with a long treatment before the nobody's jam, which really caught me by surprise. Altogether the NFA is well over 10 minutes, near or over 15 I think, settling into a nice BPeter with good slide guitar.
